Don't Get Ripped Off: Three Car-Buying Tips from Gates County's Top Auto Expert

Published on September 24th, 2025

This past Wednesday, the Gates County Chamber of Commerce hosted its monthly Lunch & Learn, and the topic was a game-changer for anyone considering their next vehicle purchase.

Our guest speaker, Cecil Bagley, a Gates County auto expert, shared invaluable insights on navigating the complex world of car buying. The room was buzzing with questions, and we're so grateful to everyone who joined us!

For those of you who couldn't make it, we're sharing three of the most critical takeaways from his presentation. These tips could save you thousands of dollars and a ton of stress.

Tip 1: Know Your Numbers Before You Go

The single most important thing you can do is get pre-approved for a loan before you even step on a car lot. This gives you a firm number to work with and takes the power out of the dealer's hands.

Tip 2: Understand the "Out the Door" Price

Don't fall for a low advertised price. Ask for the "out the door" price, which includes all taxes, fees, and charges. It’s the only way to get a true apples-to-apples comparison between different dealers.

Tip 3: The Power of Walking Away

The biggest weapon you have as a buyer is your willingness to walk away. If you feel pressured or if the deal doesn't feel right, leave. There's always another car, and another dealer.

This is just a small sample of the insights shared at our Lunch & Learn events. We host these to provide real value to our members and the wider Gates County community.

If you want to be part of the next conversation, be sure to keep an eye on our social media for the announcement of our next Lunch & Learn, happening on the fourth Wednesday of next month.
