Sunbury, NC — The Gates County Chamber of Commerce is proud to spotlight Saved Memories and More as our Business of the Month. Tucked away in the heart of Sunbury, this charming gift shop and thrift store is more than just a place to browse — it's a place where stories are preserved, treasures are discovered, and new memories begin.

A New Chapter for a Familiar Face

After more than 30 years of serving the community at the Sunbury Post Office, Carol Hobbs decided that retirement didn't mean slowing down. Instead, he chose to remain active in the community by opening a business that celebrates the past while creating space for the future.

"My upcoming retirement from the Sunbury Post Office facilitated my desire to remain active in the community by opening a business along with my participation in the Gates County Community Events Group," says Mr. Hobbs.

For Carol, returning to Sunbury in 1983 felt like coming home. With grandparents and parents from Gates and Chowan Counties, his roots run deep in this corner of North Carolina. The support he received from friends and family during his years at the post office was incredible — and he's hoping that support continues as he embarks on this new adventure.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Saved Memories and More carries a deeply personal meaning. Mr. Hobbs's business partner owns a rocking chair that was purchased by his grandparents. Over the years, that chair has comforted children,  grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It has long represented a safe spot surrounded by love and security — those are the "saved memories."

But here's where the magic happens: the articles in the shop represent a chance for your new "and more" memories to begin. Whether it's a vintage mirror, a hand-carved treasure, or a piece of upcycled furniture, every item in the store has the potential to become part of your story.

"We want people to find something that speaks to them," says Mr. Hobbs. "Something that reminds them of the past or inspires them for the future."

Why Sunbury?

When asked why he chose to plant his roots in Sunbury, Carol's answer is simple: family and community.

"Having close family ties in Gates and Chowan Counties, I decided to return in 1983 to reside in Sunbury. I have had great support from friends and family as I served the community at the Sunbury Post Office, which I hope will continue on my new adventure."

Sunbury is special. The people are special. And for Carol, opening a business here was the natural next step in his commitment to serving this corner of Gates County.

Hidden Treasures Await

If you only have five minutes to spend in the shop, what should you look for? According to Mr. Hobbs, the answer is simple: everything.

"Many items may catch your attention at first, but look closer to see the hidden treasures that you have been looking for."

From exceptional antiques to mirrors with gilded frames, from beautiful handmade items to stunning paintings and hand-carved pieces, the shop has seen it all. And the best part? You never know what you'll find on any given day.

Curated with Care

How does Carol decide what makes it onto the shelves at Saved Memories and More? Every item is picked with three things in mind: uniqueness, appearance, and initial cost to support local expectations.

The result is a carefully curated collection of antiques, upcycled furniture, jewelry, mirrors, one-of-a-kind articles, and past and present everyday home accessories. If it's in the shop, it's there for a reason.

A Day in the Life

Running a small business in a rural community isn't easy, but Carol Hobbs approaches it with dedication and care. A typical morning involves arriving early to ensure the shop is ready in all aspects — from displays to inventory to customer service.

"Just hanging a sign will not lead to a profitable business," he says. "Customer interaction, competitive pricing, advertising, and a goal to give your best every day — that's what it takes."

And it's working. The proudest moment for Mr. Hobbs so far? The incredible positive feedback from customers and friends.

"Hearing that someone found exactly what they were looking for, or that a piece reminded them of a loved one — that's what it's all about."

Looking Ahead

Where does Carol Hobbs see Saved Memories and More in the next 3-5 years?

"I want to maintain an ethical small business based in Sunbury," he says. "I look to the Chamber for information, feedback, and guidance to maintain and grow our business."

The goal isn't to be the biggest — it's to be the best. A place where the community can find treasures, create memories, and feel at home.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For anyone sitting on a business idea in Gates County but afraid to take the leap, Carol has some straightforward advice:

  1. Investigate the market — Know what you're getting into.
  2. Make a plan with dates — Set deadlines for completing physical and economic requirements.
  3. Stay focused — Keep your eyes on the goal.
  4. Ask questions — Reach out to shop owners and local and state resources for guidance.

"Don't be afraid to take the leap," he says. "The Gates County business community is here for you."
